In-Kind Donations

In-kind donations of material and labor are always welcome. Many groups will solicit in-kind services to assist in raising the sponsorship fee. Other groups simply have access to contractors that would like to use their skills on the Habitat home. In-kind values range from $100 to $9,000 depending on the service and if labor is included with the material donation. Values are determined by Habitat based on the cost savings we obtain.

An in-kind donation MUST BE a service or product needed to complete the home. We have a list of all items that are currently used to construct our home designs - “Material Take Off” sheets – which are available to you if you plan to solicit in-kind donations. Materials and donations must conform to this list unless the Director of Construction at Habitat’s offices authorizes a change. Home styles are listed in the Material Take Off sheets. The list of materials can vary on different house styles. Please contact the development office for a copy of the material take off sheets.

The donation must be a complete package ie: HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, etc. Only one of each package will be accepted. The work must be completed by a licensed journeyman and meet current local building codes. This work must also pass city inspections.

If donations are placed in the house that do not comply to the material takeoffs or plans, without prior approval, they may have to be removed and replaced – the cost of this would then be borne by the home sponsor.

A home may not be funded by in-kind donations alone. At least half of the sponsorship costs must be cash donations.

The In-Kind Agreement Form must be completed on all in-kind donations and be turned into Habitat 30 to 60 days prior to the start of the build.

Here are the Steps to securing In-Kind Donations:

  1. When you approach the provider make sure they are also aware of the above guidelines.
    • Copy the Material Take Off sheets that apply to the provider.(If you are talking to a plumbing contractor copy the plumbing, etc.)
    • Inform them that these are the materials they are agreeing to provide.
    • Ask them to then complete an “In-kind Agreement” form. All in-kind forms need to be in 30 days prior to build start date (60 days prior for plumbing or concrete).
  2. Fax or Mail completed form to the Director of Construction at Habitat’s offices.
  3. Habitat will then contact the provider and schedule a time for the donation to be completed or delivered.
  4. Habitat will inform you of the value that this donation is worth once the work is complete. Our values are based upon what we currently pay for the same service or materials.
